Jermaine Francis - Post Industrial Dreamscape and the refusal of old attitudes to die.

An interview with artist, Jermaine Francis, about his recent exhibition at Hapax Living Room and some controversial reaction to it.

Dear Friends, I’m talking to my good friend, Jermaine Francis, who has recently been exhibiting his multi-faceted Post Industrial Dreamscape at Hapax Living Room in London.

The talk can be divided in two parts; the first is a detailed discussion about the genesis and themes of the work and how the vestiges, or ‘spirits’, of the colonial mindset endure.

The second part is about an incident that took place in which a visitor to the show attempted to undermine a factual issue raised by Jermaine in Post Industrial Dreamscape. In doing this they revealed a problematic, reactionary position which, ironically, highlighted and reinforced issues central to Jermaine’s practise.

Jermaine and I go on to discuss Derrida’s theory of 'Hauntology’ in relation to the legacy of Enoch Powell’s Rivers of Blood speech and how those ‘spirits’ have morphed but not disappeared.

I’m very grateful to Jermaine for remaining calm and patient as I felt my way through a very sensitive subject.

I hope you enjoy this discussion. Please let me know what occurs to you in the chat or DM me, Alex
