NOTES ON A DUET - THE NEW SHOW AT FPG
My notes on Jem Southam and Barbara Bosworth's photographs in our new show at Flow Photographic Gallery.
A new way of communicating about photography.
I am inspired by Patti Smith to start recording videos where I get to discuss the photographic issue du jour. I have spent a long time in photography in various roles; photographer, printer, curator, writer. But what connects all of those different aspects of the medium is the physicality of photography on paper. I love prints and books and believe, indefensibly perhaps, that a photograph is not a photograph until it can be ripped.
I want to find people who have a similar connection to photography as me - people who love taking pictures and aren’t always asking themselves “why?”. It’s enough to love the print.
I am lucky to have worked with some of the greats and I’ve learned lots from them. In particular that childlike enthusiasm is the one connecting quality that the best share. That’s not to say that photographers are easy or forgiving, or even tempered - just that, when it comes to the act of photography there’s one thing that binds them all.
I will be posting as much as I can - my posts will be adhoc and lo-fi - coming on me in the spur of the moment.
4. Use an image and “subscribe” buttons
A picture will look nicer when you share the post on your social media (click the image icon in the editor to search for copyright-free photos), and it will give color to your archive as you build it.
[EDIT ME]“Subscribe” buttons (found in your editor under “Buttons'“) will make it easy for new readers to subscribe to your newsletter with one click.[EDIT ME]
5. Ignore our advice
There is no one true way to go about building a Substack. This is your playground, experiment with it. If you’re having fun, your readers will too.
(But trust us on the “subscribe” buttons!)
